2005 Texas Newsletter
Texas HSTA
members Leigh Christensen and Toni Gorham make new friends in
Mexico while testing their new bullet proof riding suits on the Copper Canyon
adventure after this years Ride the Rio event.
ATTENTION: This may be your last snail mail copy of this newsletter! Past and present newsletters are now
available at the revamped Texas HSTA web site, http://www.txhsta.com/ under Newsletters. If you do not have access to the internet
at home, work, friend or public library, please contact me and we will continue
to mail you a copy. By most going to
the web site, we can save the club about $2,000 a year in printing/mailing
costs and the state directors days of tedious mailing. Plus we can have more color photos!
Texas Website - Volunteer to the Rescue! We are pleased to announce that Dave Long, who joined HSTA as new
member in November at the Hill Country Rally, has redesigned our website,
http://www.txhsta.com/. Dave says he’s never been hired so quickly. (wait till
he gets his first paycheck!) This effort has been LONG (no pun intended) over
due and we are really excited about Dave’s contribution. Dave lives in
Lewisville and rides an ST1100. Watch your email for updates, development is
moving right along and we’ll want your feedback…...

26 Saturday Dogwood Dayz ….returns
Back by popular demand,
ride-meister Sir Bob Mizner will again host a day ride in
beautiful East Texas on Saturday, March 26th, 2005. This was such a success in
2003 that people continue to ask for an encore, so here it is. Mark your
calendars now. This is a "just for fun" non-event, and is open to all
bikes and riders. Folks riding from the DFW Metroplex can do this ride and
return in one day, but anyone interested in staying over and perhaps riding
some more scenic roads on Sunday before returning home can book a condo at
Holly Lake Ranch. I've reserved some 1- and 2-bedroom units with lofts and
sleeper sofas, so sharing with some mates is really quite affordable. For
information and reservations, contact Sue at Holly Realty, 903-769-4203. Tell
her you are with Bob Mizner's party. Plan to meet at the Holly Chevron, 1 mile
south of Holly Lake Ranch on FM 2869 at 9:00 AM on Saturday, March 26th. Holly
Lake Ranch is about 100 miles east of Dallas in beautiful Wood County. From
Dallas, take US 80 east to Hawkins, then go north on TX 14 to 2869, then right
onto 2869 north. From Houston and points south, take FM 14 north from Tyler.
For more information about Dogwood Dayz, contact Bob Mizner at 903-769-3613 or
e-mail Rapidrobert69@juno.com.

Rally. Make your own reservations, show
up anytime, leave anytime, make your own routes and have fun. This is a non-organized meet and greet. Everyone is responsible for themselves for
getting to/from the event as well as any riding during the event. This is also in conjunction with some members
of the ST Owners Club and their CampSTOC.
HSTA Member Assistance
Partner (MAP)
The HSTA-MAP program is designed to assist any
HSTA member who would like to be temporarily teamed with a veteran HSTA member
for any or all (but not limited to) of the following reasons.
They are a new HSTA member, new to attending
HSTA events, a returning HSTA member, new riders, new to “Sport
Touring”/”Sport” motorcycle riding, would like to have an experienced rider
review their road riding skills, they are uneasy about riding due to a recent
accident or close call and/or would like to be introduced to more HSTA members.
The map program will be available at all future HSTA - AMA sanctioned events
and at larger local rides.
MAPs will be teamed with members of similar
riding tastes and skills. They will introduce their partner to other HSTA
members, help to familiarize them with the event, give them a better
understanding of what the HSTA is all about, take them on at least a one day
ride during the event and stress the value of “riding your own pace” on that
ride. The MAP will be teamed with their
partner for this event only, unless they both agree that they would like to be
teamed in the future.
The MAP program was tested at the 2003 Mail
Pouch Fly-By and the results were very promising. Members that were teamed
together were very pleased with the program. Look for the sign-up forms at the
next event you attend and be a MAP for the day. Your participation will help to
make another member feel welcome in the HSTA, help them to have a safe,
enjoyable event and you may gain a new friend in the process.
Posters will be at each sanctioned event
promoting the program. So sign up as a MAP, if you would like to help
out.

The
Lunch Ride: Blue
Licks Battlefield State Resort
Blue Licks
Battlefield State Resort commemorates more than one era of history! Salt
springs at Blue Licks attracted prehistoric mammoths and formed a center of
Indian life, then later proved important to frontiersmen like Daniel Boone, who
was captured here by Indians while operating the saltworks. During the 19th
century, the mineral springs were a popular health resort. But Blue Licks is
most renowned as the site of the last battle of the Revolutionary War in
Kentucky. In 1782, Kentuckians engaged Indians and British soldiers near the
Licking River. For more information
check the web: http://parks.ky.gov/bluelick.htm
For more information on STAR 05 or to get a copy of the registration form check out the HSTA web site at www.ridehsta.com.
I got some neat photos from Texas HSTA’er Dave Gorham I thought I would share from the Copper Canyon adventure that took place right after this year’s successful Ride the Rio. Check next month’s Texas Newsletter and STAReview for ride reports on these two wonderful events. To better view these color photos, be sure to check them out at our revamped Texas HSTA web site, www.txhsta.com.
