NORTH TEXAS DIRECTOR DIALOGUE – Preston Juvenal

Well we skipped our June newsletter so we could really have something to write about after STAR. You want my report? IT WAS FANTASTIC !!! Spending a week in Colorado on a motorcycle (any motorcycle) is heaven on earth, period. I spent 5 days with family and friends rolling next to rivers, cliffs all with views that stagger the citified dude’s imagination…

Mr. Lynn Weas, the Christie Lodge and the all the Volunteers did a terrific job of organizing the event with great evening seminars and lots to do throughout the week. I think the final head count was close to 400 registered attendees.

STAR always brings out the best of HSTA, the people, the riding, the atmosphere and camaraderie are all second to none. And, it always reminds me how much I enjoy the people I have met in this club and all that HSTA has to offer riders like you and me. Sitting in the State Directors meeting, the subject of  recruiting “younger” riders always comes up. The average age in this club is 45 for gosh sakes. But as I looked around STAR I noted a seasoned group of riders with little to prove to anyone. Guess that’s another benefit, I learn a lot by hanging with guys that are serious about safety and “The Pace.”

Another point that struck me was that our Executive Committee has developed a benefits program that is world class and if you avail yourself of just a fraction, you’ll find your annual fee covered and then some. Look in your Blue Book, probably the most underutilized directory on the planet.

So you might ask, where is STAR next year?  How about Asheville, North Carolina, ya’ll… right in the heart of the mountains and just a jump from the famed (infamous?) Deal’s Gap and the Cherohola Skyway. This is some of the best riding in that part of the world. I’m already making plans… back to Coloradojust a minute….if you’re still with me, the pictures are worth it.

Keep an eye out for our local rides, we’ll see ya out there. Preston

Team OGRE

TexasWorld Speedway

8-Hour Endurance Race

Left to right: Jon Whitfill, Randy Martin, Tom Anderson, Glenn Bradshaw.  The #34 SV650R Team OGRE Race Team

Annually, the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) hosts an 8-hour endurance race.  The Club’s endurance series is generally touted as “the best in the country”, and has produced some really big names in motorcycle racing (Spencer, Schwantz, Edwards, Hayden, Spies, etc).  Team OGRE (Old Guys Racing) competed and won the Formula 2 class for this second round of the CMRA Endurance Series.

Texas World Speedway, a former NASCAR oval track with a 2.9 mile infield course is located in College Station TX, and is known for being a practice track for factory race teams getting ready for Daytona.  The infield course incorporates part of the banked oval as the front straight, and promotes very high speeds for everything from the Suzuki SV650, to the potent GSXR1000.  All on the track at the same time! Every year, the CMRA holds 2-3 races there, including the 8 hour endurance race.

Team OGRE consists of Randy Martin, Glenn Bradshaw, LouisRienartz, Tom Anderson, and Travis Peirce, and they race a 2001 SV 650R on Bridgestone tires. A “fast lap” for an SV in at this track is around 1:54, with most in that class averaging around 2 minutes.

In the race on April 21st, Randy, Glenn and Tom shared racing duties for the race, with a new affiliation to Amsoil and Tim Vipond as a new sponsor.  Amsoil10w-40 Motorcycle Oil was changed in to the engine prior to the race, as well as using many Amsoil products like chain lube and “Miracle Wash”.

Glenn got out to a great start, coming from 30thplace overall in the original grid, and 6th in class.  After the 3rd lap, Glenn had the team up to 3rd in class and about 15th overall! Glenn also held the “fast lap” for the team with a 1:56.479.  Randy and Tom held the position during their stints on the track, as well as passing many of the teams that were in 4th- 8th places, putting a big gap on the teams chasing the top three.  Team OGRE chased last year’s class Champions (Fireball Racing out of College Station) and the class Champions from several previous years, FaltlessRacing (Garland TX), staying within 6 minutes (about 3-4 laps) for the majority of the race.

Pit stops are a strong point for Team OGRE, usually spending 5-15 seconds in the pits during rider changes and fueling! Obviously, fast, consistent lap times by all three racers, coupled with awesome pit stops, no mistakes, and one set of tires (yes, one set for the whole race) made a difference.  In the 5th hour, Team OGRE had moved in to 2nd place in class, behind Fireball who lead by 4 laps over OGRE.  Faltless Racing had a minor crash that put them 11 or so laps behind OGRE before they could get back on the track in 3rdplace in class.  Glenn was out during that position gain, and when Randy went out after him, the team began to set strategy for the remainder of the race. Ultimately, the strategy that had worked so well during first 5 hours was what they would stick to.  Don’t make mistakes, keep consistent lap times, stay fast in the pits, and start to conserve the tires.

Just prior to the 7th hour, Fireball had a catastrophic engine failure that ended their race.  Only being 4 laps down, Team OGRE quickly made up the deficit and took 1st place in class.  Randy Martin finished the race, leading the last 45 minutes and 11 laps ahead of 2nd place in class Faltless Racing.

Team OGRE Racing would certainly like to recognize those that made this race such a success! Chris Martin (Randy’s wife), Linda Bradshaw (Glenn’s wife), Jon Whitfill(pit crew), Cycle Center of Denton, Bridgestone Tires (awesome tires lasting for 7 hours and 45 minutes at race pace!), Tim Vipondand Amsoil (awesome products!), Pit Bull stands, Chickenhawk tire warmers, and M4 Exhaust!
