Director Dialogue

So, you may ask why am I getting a hard copy newsletter, or at least I might ask that question since you haven’t seen one in more than a year. And the simple answer is that not everybody has email, believe it or not. But, I’m encouraging you to at least gain access so that you might be better informed of local events. Both North and South Texasnow have Yahoo Groups established to push information to your email, you’re encouraged to join these groups for the inside scoop….

Howdy from the rain-soaked plains of North Texas. We’re dryin’ out, but what a Summer we’ve had. And if you’re into water sports, we’re definitely back in business around here. We essentially had a year’s worth of rain in June, so I got out of town. In June I attended STAR 07 in Asheville, NCwhere it didn’t rain, quite as much. STAR O7 was simply outstanding and a terrific celebration of HSTA’s 25thBirthday as we enjoyed four days of truly spectacular riding.

The Future Of HSTA? Son’s Mac and David and niece, Vanessa (Youngest Female Rider at STAR ‘07) STAR is a family affair for me, no way around it.

Mr. Fred Rau from Motorcycle Consumer Newsjoined us for the entire four days, rode every day and spoke at the closing banquet, a most entertaining fellow! See his review of STAR and HSTA in the September edition of MCN or download the entire article (PDF file) at either Yahoo Group below.  In short, he was impressed with all he met and especially moved by HSTA’scommitment to safety as he witnessed over 40 Members pick up checks ($$) through our Dan Clark Safety Program. Folks, if you’re buying gear and not sending your receipts in to enter for the drawing, you’re burnin’ money!

It’s no secret by now that STAR 08 will be held in Kerrville, TX next April and with loads of help from our TexasWebmaster, Dave Long, we’ve already established our website with all the registration information and details. Check out the cool video introduction put together by David Gorham and Chris Page. Choon Gann posted a very useful Google map of local area attractions that you’ll find useful as well. Now here’s your head’s up, and don’t say we didn’t’ warn you; the YO Ranch Resort will likely fill quickly, we expect more attendees than it’s capacity, so make your reservations early.

In an effort to better organize our actively riding members locally, S.TX Director, Mike Johnston and I have set up 2 new Yahoo Group forums. Both North and South Texas HSTA members are invited to join the Yahoo Group forum for the respective areas. These forums will become the key focal point for members to stay in touch. We’ll push out ride notices and upcoming event information via your email and members can share riding experiences, post pictures, contact other members and generally share in the community of the Group.

You are cordially invited to join this forum, just click the link, or copy and paste.

Fellow Members, I have without regard to copyright or even asking permission, dragged an dropped this great article from our Neighbors next door in Louisiana. If you don’t get their newsletter, you should at least check out the STAR 07 version http://www.lahsta.com/hsta/newsletters/star07/star07issue.htm    Here’s just a sample….

SWITCHBACKS>
by Lee Nangle
OK, I went to STAR.
You call this a motorcycle Rally?

What I saw: A parking lot full of Sport and Sport Touring Motorcycles, and for the most part, a bunch of rich, overweight white guys.

What I didn't see: Tits, burnouts, wet t-shirt contests, rock-n -roll bands, camping, mudwrestling, bikini contests, or tits. No tattoo artist on site, no airbrush artist, no body painting, bonfires, beer trucks, food vendors, or tits. How can you possibly have a rally without these things?
Is riding your only interest? Motorcycling is much bigger than that, it is a cultural experience for all the senses. What the HSTA needs is a serious motorcycle rally, I am hoping that the guys from Texas will see the light and include all the aspects I have mentioned in STAR 08.

Or maybe it will be left to the guys from LA to start to expand the club with energy and vitality. New life and enthusiasm is what this group needs. And you are right guys at the right time to introduce a more inclusive, well rounded motorcycling experience.
What of the ladies of HSTA? Might they be offended by this new activity? I think the Ladies of HSTA are the most adventurous of all the members. Personally, I think a calendar would be a great Idea. " The ladies of HSTA" might be a great fund raiser.
Also activities, such as a pajama party, and slave auction, would add flare and style to a stuffy boring meeting schedule. And with the crowning of the first ever Miss Nude HSTA, the rally would end on a very high note.
The group just needs imagination, Hooters restaurants as food vendors, exotic dancers to help with the bike wash, Asian massages available to help riders relax after the long rides.
Of course, attendance at rallies would skyrocket, with thousands, not hundreds of riders. And money would flow like oil from a Harley rally parking lot.
So, what do you say? Do you want to raise the bar, and have a proper rally, or do you just want to go to the next event….and ride?

Eh, yea, I still like rid, Ed.
