NORTH TEXAS DIRECTOR DIALOGUE – Preston Juvenal

Here we are in the midst of another Holiday Season and all I want to do is go for a ride…Toy Runs are a good reason, check the latest issue of Ride Texas Magazine. There’s a Run just about every weekend within an hour’s ride of the Metroplex. Just remember, it’s a parade, not a group ride and watch out for flying parts.

It’s also the end of the year and a time to reflect, but I won’t bore you with that. Only that I, like most of you HSTA members have a lot to be thankful for, even with those challenges we all receive. The mere fact that we are so fortunate to enjoy such an activity as sport-touring, I  nevertake it for granted, not any more…comes with age and experience, I guess.

I really want to thank all the members, each of you that attended events and weekend rides, those that volunteered to help throughout the year, those that contributed to the newsletter and those who sent me all those emails (even the racy ones) this club is all about you, thanks!

We’re taking a break for a couple of months on the newsletter, probably won’t see another issue till February, afterRide the Rio. This is such a great event, its so unique, so Texas! Thanks to Dave and Toni, ya’ll ride safe and have fun!

Greetings Fans of "Ride The Rio"!

OK, RTR is only two months away and I want to let you know that plans are well underway for the 14th "Ride The Rio" and things are expected to run much as they did last year.

First, we will again be based at the Chisos Mining Company Motel at Easter Egg Valley in Terlingua. Those of youwho stayed there last year, know it's not the biggest place and we will fill it up - so you'll need to reserve your room EARLY. However, the CMCM has told us that they will not accept reservations until three months prior to RTR - in other words, right now.

Also, like last year, there will be a choice for you on Thursday, Feb 16, 2006. You can either go to Ft. Davisfor the RTR kick-off party at Cueva de Leon, or you can go to CMCM in Terlingua for a cook-out. If you're new to RTR, the kick-off party in Ft Davis is cool because you have a great/fun meal Thursday night at Cueva, then you get to ride the fantastic "Ft. Davis Loop" Friday morning, then head south to Terlingua. However, if you prefer to get an extra day of riding in theBig Bend area, as many dual sport riders do, then join the gang for a Thursday night cook-out at the CMCM. Please RSVP to me if you're going to Ft. Davis so I can get a good head-count for the restaurant. And, if you plan on going to Terlingua instead, please know the cook-out is "BYOM" - bring your own MEAT for grilling, and a few dollars to contribute to the salads, desserts, etc (if you're riding, and can't bring your own meat, let me know and we can bring something for you).

It should be noted, Thursday night in either Ft Davis or Terlingua is NOT part of the official RTR festivities - you're on your own, so to speak - surrounded by your closest friends.

What else?

Oh - there will be a group meeting for breakfast inKerrville at the Cracker Barrel just south of I-10 Thursday (2/16) morning. From there, you can ride or drive to your destination of Terlingua or Ft. Davis.

Minor changes will be made to the RTR web site in the coming weeks, but most of the important things (dates and places) are set and already online.

Want to go to Mexico after RTR? Like years past, Tim Vipond will head this up. Send him an email with your questions.  tvipond@houston.rr.com

That's all for now. Chris, Patty, Tonie, and I are all anxious to see you and for February to arrive!

Dave

Want to go for a ride in the Houston area?

Every Saturday and Sunday morning meet with the East Fort Bend Riders Club at the Taco Cabana located 5850 State Highway 6 in Missouri City, at 8:00 on every Saturday and Sunday. This is a S-L-O-W cruiser ride for a few hours for lunch someplace different each time.

Every Sunday morning meet with the Texas Sport Bike Association at the Jack in the Box on FM359 in Brookshire just south of I-10.  We depart at 9 a.m..  This is a fast pace ride not recommended for slow pokes or beginners.  Helmet, jacket, gloves and boots required.  You can learn more about TSBA at www.tsba.org.

The remnants of "Bob's Breakfast Club" still meet fairly regularly at Starbucks, Louetta Rd. @ Kuykendahl in far NW Houston on Sunday mornings between 8am & 9am, weather permitting, and meeting a little earlier now that the weather is heating up.

A typical ride takes us on mostly back roads North to Montgomery, along SH149 thru the Sam Houston National Forest to Richards, possibly thru Anderson on to Carlos via FM3090 (famous in these parts) and lunch at either the Yankee Tavern in Carlos or a lunch/brunch back in Montgomery at King's Cafe after riding back thru Anderson and Richards.  We ride at a moderately brisk rate and always have full protective gear.

The last Wednesday of the month the HSTA travels to Angleton for Hamburger Wednesday at the Icehouse Bar & Grill, 2016 N. Velasco St Angleton, TX 77515 (979) 849-0084.  Bikes start showing up after work and stay well after dark.

Kudos toLynn Sherrill (South Texas email coordinator) for keeping all there informed. South Texas members who have not received email or snail mail from him, please contact him at marcelle100@kingwoodcable.netwith their email address.

Want to go for a ride in the North Texas area?

Sunday Rides- Charlie Wood and Wilbert Simpson lead a typically brisk paced 300 mile day through some of the more scenic and rural areas of north central Texas. Every 2nd and 4th Sunday we meet in Arlington for breakfast, then head out for points south and beyond. We have numerous routes that we ride, but are known to explore new roads. We always find a good place to eat. Best way to know when and where: get on Charlie’s email list charlie-wood@sbcglobal.net or call him (817) 467-6042. A reminder is sent out about mid-week along with a planned route of the ride. We welcome all who want to ride, members and nonmembers, invite a friend.

Saturday Rides – Regional VP, Jim Poulos, Jamo1935@aol.com coordinates Saturday Rides from the DFW Metroplexarea. Watch your email for notification…..

Want to go for a ride in Mexico?– Join Tim Vipond immediately following Ride the Rio (www.ridetherio.com) for a great ride through the Copper Canyon and usually a trip to west coast.  Be sure to click on the Copper Canyon button to learn what you need to get your bike and yourself across the border.
